The venue broke ground in 1969 and was inaugurated for the public on January 3, 1972, with a total construction cost of $11.5 million. The architecture of the building is designed by Robert M. Coleman & Partners. It is under the ownership of Louisiana State University and operated by LSU Athletics Department.
