About Calgary Flames

Professional ice hockey is played in Calgary, and the Calgary Flames are the city's team. The Flames are Calgary's third major professional ice hockey team, and they compete in the NHL as a member of the Western Conference. Originally established as the Atlanta Flames in 1972, the franchise moved to Calgary in 1980. The Flames called the Stampede Corral home for their first three years in Calgary. 1983, the team moved into the Scotiabank Saddledome (the Olympic Saddledome). The Flames' mascot is Harvey the Hound. In 1983, he was made so that he could play for both the Flames and the Canadian Football League's Calgary Stampeders. When the National Hockey League originally began, Harvey was its mascot. Harvey gained notoriety in January 2003 when Edmonton Oilers head coach Craig MacTavish ripped out Harvey's tongue for disturbing the Oilers' bench. From 1997 to 2000, St. Louis was a part of the Flames' organization. He split his time between the Flames' AHL farm team, the Saint John Flames, and the NHL squad. The eleventh player to be inducted into the Hall of Fame was Jarome Iginla on June 24, 2020. During his stint with the Flames (from 1996 through 2013), Iginla won multiple trophies, including the Art Ross Trophy, the Lester B. Pearson Award, and the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy. The Flames' 5-2 loss to the Jets in April 2024 ended their playoff hopes. In March 2024, the Calgary Flames and the Philadelphia Flyers were involved in a three-way transaction that sent Noah Hanifin to the Vegas Golden Knights.  The Golden Knights of Sin City traded for maybe the market's top defenseman, Noah Hanifin, from the Calgary Flames just over 48 hours before Friday's NHL trade deadline.  The transaction between Vegas and Calgary included defenseman Daniil Miromanov, a conditional first-round selection in 2025, and a conditional third-round pick in 2024. Calgary will keep half of Hanifin's remaining $4.95 million salary. Under new head coach Ryan Huska, the Calgary Flames have had a busy preseason in 2024. They have focused on revitalizing their attack and enhancing team bonding. The Flames have tried several line configurations in search of the ideal mix to maximize their scoring capability. While the defense, under MacKenzie Weegar, has been strong, Jonathan Huberdeau has found more ease in his performance.  With both goalies giving great performances, Jacob Markstrom and Dan Vladar's goaltender fight has become a major narrative point. After a dismal 2023–24 season, the Flames want to return to postseason contention.
